MG Motor, manufacturer of the popular ZS small SUV, is about to take on the large SUV market with its MG QS seven-seater, which was unveiled at the recent Melbourne Motor Show.

The family-focused SUV will offer plenty of room – it is larger than the popular Toyota Kluger – and MG’s combination of good looks and value for money.

Pricing had not been confirmed at the time of writing, although the local MG website has invited expressions of interest in the QS. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 153kW/360Nm, while a more efficient and likely more powerful plug-in hybrid version is expected to arrive later in 2025.

The QS’s arrival will flesh out MG’s burgeoning SUV line-up which already includes the ZS small SUV and HS mid-size SUV.

Australians have taken a shining to the MG ZS in recent years and it was the best-selling small SUV under $45,000, according to March VFACTS figures.

The mid-sized MG HS has not fared as well as its smaller sibling sales wise, so it will be interesting to see if the QS’s combination of size and value can sway buyers away from traditional market leaders such as the Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe.

The QS was one of several models MG revealed during the Melbourne Motor Show.

Chinese utes have flooded the Australian market in recent times and MG is also tossing its hat in the ring later this year with the MG U9.

Tuned for local conditions, the U9 ute will be offered in dual-cab spec with a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine putting out 164kW. MG has not released a torque figure but pundits believe it will be around 500Nm.

The U9 is scheduled to appear in showrooms in late 2025 covered by MG’s 10-year/250,000km warranty.

Other models MG previewed at the Melbourne Motor Show included:

IM5 and IM6

Two EVs from IM Motors, a joint venture between MG’s parent company SAIC Motor and a consortium of technology companies. IM (which stands for Intelligence in Motion) is being sold as a premium Chinese brand that will showcase “innovation, luxury and elegance”. The IM5 is a four-door sedan, while the IM6 is an SUV.

MG S5 EV

Built on the same platform as the MG 4 hatchback, the MG S5 EV is a compact pure-electric SUV and will be the first of the new MGs to debut in Australia.

HS Hybrid+

Due out in the second half of 2025, the HS Hybrid+ is the second MG SUV to get the hybrid treatment following the launch of the ZS Hybrid late last year.

“Our ambition is to offer Australians a quality vehicle at every $10,000 price point, and this expanded line-up brings us one step closer to making that a reality,” said MG Motor Australia CEO, Peter Ciao.
