Frequently asked questions

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of policy that can cover unexpected events, emergencies, accidents, lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations that might occur whilst travelling. Cancellation cover may also be available pre-trip. The level of cover provided will depend on the type of policy chosen.

How much does domestic travel insurance cost?

The cost of domestic travel insurance varies depending on many factors such as trip duration, the type of trip and any activities you are planning. Individual factors such as age, pre-existing medical conditions and the level of cover required can also determine the cost of travel insurance. Domestic travel insurance for seniors is available as well as for adults and children.

How can I lower the cost of my travel insurance?

You could look to reduce the cost of your travel insurance policy in a few ways. If taking more than one trip in a year, it might work out cheaper to purchase a Comprehensive Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy compared to a single trip policy.

Do I need domestic travel insurance for trips in Australia?

Accidents, delays and lost luggage can easily happen in Australia as they can while travelling overseas. A domestic travel insurance policy can provide peace of mind and cover for travel delays, luggage and personal items, travel documents, amendment or cancellation costs, additional expenses and more depending on the policy you choose to purchase.

How long does travel insurance last?

Typically, customers purchase travel insurance policies to cover them from the time they leave home to the time they return. Maximum trip durations often apply. A single trip travel insurance policy will provide coverage for the dates selected when purchasing a policy, whilst a Comprehensive Annual Multi-Trip policy will cover multiple trips throughout the one year, but a maximum duration per trip applies. NRMA Insurance's Comprehensive Domestic Annual Multi-Trip domestic policy provides cover for trip durations of 15 or 30 days.

What is a travel insurance excess?

The excess is the amount of a claim that you contribute to.

What is my excess for the Domestic Plan?

The Domestic Comprehensive Plan and the Domestic Cancellation Plan with NRMA Insurance have a $50 excess. Other excess amounts may be available.

Does travel insurance cover loss of income?

If during the period of insurance you suffer an injury caused solely and directly by violent, accidental, visible and external means (not caused by a sickness or disease) resulting in you losing income because you were unable to return to your usual place of employment in Australia, NRMA Insurance's Domestic Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plan may provide cover up to $333.33 per month for your monthly net of income tax wage, but not in respect of the first 30 days after you originally planned to resume your work in Australia and only if your disability occurs within 30 days of the accident.

Can I get travel insurance when pregnant?

Yes, you may be able to get travel insurance when pregnant, but there are restrictions around this and cover is limited. Cover is only provided for serious, unexpected pregnancy complications that occur up until the 24th week of pregnancy i.e. up to 23 weeks, 6 days.

If you know you are pregnant at the time of purchasing a policy, you will need to apply for cover of your pregnancy if:

  • there have been complications with this pregnancy or a previous pregnancy;
  • you have a multiple pregnancy e.g. twins or triplets; or
  • the conception was medically assisted e.g. using assisted fertility treatment including hormone therapies or IVF
  • there is no cover for childbirth or costs relating to the health or care of a newborn child are not covered, irrespective of the stage of pregnancy when the child is born.
What activities are included in the cover?

Australia domestic travel insurance plans with NRMA Insurance automatically cover a comprehensive list of activities to cater for a wide range of travellers. Activities include:

  • Abseiling
  • Archery
  • Ballooning
  • Bungy jumping
  • Flying fox
  • Horse riding
  • Jet boating
  • Jet skiing
  • Kayaking
  • Paragliding
  • Parasailing
  • Snorkelling
  • Surfing
  • Trekking
  • White water rafting
  • Working holidays

If you wish to be covered for a different activity such as snow skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling, you must tell us when you purchase the policy and an extra premium must be paid.

On an Annual Multi-Trip policy, do I need to be a certain distance from home to be covered?

If your destination takes you more than 250 kilometres from your home, cover will be provided up to the trip duration you have selected on the Annual Multi-Trip policy. For destinations less than 250 kilometres from home, your trip must include at least one night paid accommodation booked with an accommodation supplier or provider (including a hotel, Bed & Breakfast (B&B), service apartment or peer to peer service such as Airbnb) for cover to be provided for that trip.
