Learner driving lessons

Learn to drive with a trusted instructor

At NRMA Driver Training, we offer driving lessons for learner drivers looking to get their licence or increase confidence on the road.

Our learner driver program is focused on measuring progress and developing driver skills. We also offer complementary training, like the Safer Drivers Course, that develops safe driving practice that goes beyond your licence test.

Frequently asked questions

How can I view availability in my location?

New customers

When you book your driving lesson online you must enter your pick-up location or postcode and the lesson type. When this is selected you will be able to view the current available times and dates for the lesson type you've selected.

Returning customers

Sign in to your account and then click 'Book driving lesson' next to the desired driving school location. Select your preferred lesson type, instructor and enter your location for available dates and times.

What are log book bonus hours?

3 for 1 bonus hours

When you have professional driving lessons with an NRMA driving instructor, you are eligible to record bonus driving time in your log book.

This Transport for NSW initiative allows learner drivers to log multiple hours when a structured professional driving lesson is completed.

  • Driving with a licensed NSW driving instructor – you can record triple the time of your lesson in your log book. For example, if you have a 1-hour lesson, you can log 3 hours of driving practice.
  • Applying bonus hours – a maximum of 10 hours with a driving instructor can be applied. This means that you can only log up to 20 bonus hours.
  • Number of lessons you can have – there is no limit to how many lessons you can have with a driving instructor. There is only a limit on the number of bonus hours you can log for those lessons.
  • Driving lessons at night – if you have a driving lesson at night, the bonus hours do not count towards your ‘night driving hours’ in your log book. They can only count as daytime driving hours.

NSW Safer Drivers Course

An additional 20 hours of log book credit can be earned when you complete the Safer Drivers Course.

This course has been designed for a learner to attend once, so the 20 hours of bonus log book credit will only be deducted once.

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept payment via Visa and Mastercard.

If you have a pre-purchased lesson voucher, you can book your driving lesson or course with your unique voucher code by selecting 'Pay with voucher' at the payment step.

Where can I find my voucher code, usage and expiry date?
You can view your voucher code, usage and expiry by signing in to your account and clicking the ‘Vouchers’ tab.
When do vouchers expire?
Vouchers issued for use with our NSW driving schools have an expiry of 3 years from the time of issue.
How long do the lessons go for?
Most driving lessons range between 60-90 minutes. However bookings are also available for 2 hour and 3 hour driving lessons.
What is the difference between Safer Drivers Course and learner driver lessons?

The Safer Drivers Course teaches people aged under 25 who have their learner licence to develop safe driving skills. You must have completed a minimum of 50 log book hours of on-road driving (excluding any 3 for 1 bonus hours) to attend.

This course can help you understand speed management, gap selection, hazard awareness, safe following distances and how to keep driving safely when you get distracted.

The course includes a 3-hour (theory) group discussion with other learners and a 2 hour (practical) coaching session in a vehicle with another learner.

How can I change my lesson day or time?

You can update your booking to an alternate time by signing in to your account and selecting a new day and time for your lesson or course (subject to availability).

You can update/ cancel your lesson booking up until 18 hours before the lesson time or 5 days from the Module 1 (theory session) of your Safer Drivers Course booking.

Can I learn in a manual transmission vehicle?

Whilst driving lessons in a manual transmission vehicle are available, sessions are limited and only available in selected areas.

You can find out whether manual driving lessons are available in your area when you enter your location and lesson type. If a manual driving school car is available in your selected location, you will see (manual) in the driving lesson title.

For example: Initial lesson (manual) 1hr, 30 mins

If a manual driving school car isn’t available in your area but you have access to a manual vehicle, we may be able to provide lessons in your own vehicle on a case by case basis.

Your driving will be assessed in an automatic transmission drive school car first to ensure it is safe for you to complete driving lessons in a vehicle without dual controls.

After your first initial lesson, please have a chat with your driving instructor about completing future lessons in your own manual transmission vehicle. In this instance your vehicle must be comprehensively insured and meet our roadworthy requirements.

I’m an older student, can I still take lessons as a learner?
We welcome all learner drivers across NSW and ACT. We cater for students of all ages and driving experience.
